Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the castor oil plant Ricinus communis. The castor oil plant is primarily grown in Africa, South America, and India. India is actually known as the world leader in castor oil production. Castor oil is produced by cold-pressing castor seeds and then applying heat.  Castor oil is widely used as an ingredient in cosmetics, because it can add a hydrating effect to cosmetics without clogging pores or irritating skin..

Castor oil has many potential benefits. These include:

Preventing wrinkles

Castor oil contains antioxidants that fight free radicals in your body. Free radicals are responsible for accelerating the aging process, making wrinkles appear sooner.

Fighting acne

Castor oil has antibacterial properties. Bacteria on your face can clog pores and lead to acne.

Reducing puffiness

Castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce swelling and puffiness. It could reduce the size of inflamed pimples or eye bags as well.

Moisturizing

Moisture keeps your skin looking young, shiny, and healthy. Moisture also prevents wrinkles.

Soothing sunburn

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, castor oil may ease the pain associated with sunburn. Its moisturizing qualities may also reduce peeling.

Fighting dry lips

Castor oil is a very common ingredient in both lipstick and lip gloss. If you have dry lips, skip the color and use castor oil. But you may want to mix it with a better-tasting oil, like coconut oil.

Promoting overall skin health

Castor oil is full of healthy fatty acids. Fatty acids are essential to maintaining good skin health.

Before you purchase any castor oil, read the label to confirm that it’s pure castor oil. Castor oil that has been blended with other oils or ingredients may cause irritation, or not produce the result you’re seeking.  Grass Roots Body Care Organic Castor Oil is 100% pure.

A day before your first eyelash treatment, swatch a small amount of the oil on another part of your skin, like your arm. If you don’t develop any skin irritation, the oil should be safe for use on your eyelashes.

The best time to treat your eyelashes is before you go to bed. To treat your eyelashes with castor oil:

  • make sure your eyelashes are clean and completely free of makeup
  • pick up a small amount of castor oil by dipping a cotton swab gently into the oil
  • delicately run the cotton swab along the top of your lash line, taking great care to not allow any of the oil into your eye (oil that gets in your eye could be extremely irritating and should be washed out immediately with water)
  • wash off the castor oil in the morning with water or makeup remover

When applying castor oil to your eyelashes, be very careful that it doesn’t get into your eye. In the event that it does, flush your eye with water.

Castor oil is generally regarded as safe. However, some people may have an allergic reaction to castor oil. It’s best to test castor oil on a small area of your skin 24 hours before applying it to your face.

How to use castor oil on eyebrows

It’s important to choose a product that is pure castor oil. Castor oil that has been blended with other oils or additives may cause irritation and not produce desired results.

Before you apply castor oil to your eyebrows, do a patch test to make sure you won’t have an allergic reaction.

To do a patch test: Apply a few drops of castor oil on the underside of your arm. Wait at least a day to see if the area develops symptoms of an allergy, such as redness, swelling, and itchiness.  If you don’t develop any allergic reactions, you can proceed with using it on your face.

To apply castor oil to the eyebrows:

  1. Pick a time of day to apply castor oil to the eyebrows on a daily basis. At night, before bed, is a good choice so that the thick oil can remain on the brows while you sleep. You may want to protect your pillowcase with a towel.
  2. Make sure your eyebrows are clean and free of makeup.
  3. Use a cotton swab or clean mascara wand to wipe a small amount of castor oil over the eyebrows.
  4. Gently massage the castor oil into the eyebrows. Take special care to not allow any castor oil to come into contact with the eyes. If it does, wash it out immediately.
  5. Wash the castor oil off in the morning with water or a mild cleanser.

To use castor oil for wrinkles,  oil in a dropper bottle can make application easier.  Some oils also come pre-diluted with other plant oils, often called carrier oils, for enhanced absorption. You can dilute castor oil on your own at a 1:1 ratio (1-part castor oil to 1-part other oil).  Olive, grapeseed, and avocado oils are good dilution recommendations.

Under eyes

  • Step 1: In the morning, cleanse facial skin and dry off any moisture.
  • Step 2: Place one drop of castor oil onto the tip of your finger. Apply it to the skin under your eyes and especially on wrinkle-prone areas. Avoid getting oil in your eyes. You can also apply the oil to other facial areas such as the skin near the outer corners of your eyes, the bridge of your nose, and near and between your eyes.
  • Step 3: Leave on your skin for about 20 minutes, the time it takes for castor oil to absorb into your skin.
  • Step 4: Afterward, gently wash the areas where you’ve applied the oil. Apply products such as moisturizers, makeup, cover creams, and others as usual.
  • Repeat these steps each evening as well. For long-lasting benefits, Incorporate these steps into your routine daily.

Around mouth

  • Step 1: In the morning, cleanse your lips and the skin around your mouth and dry well.
  • Step 2: Place one drop of castor oil onto the tip of your finger. Apply it to the skin around your mouth, especially in wrinkle-prone areas. If you have a castor oil-containing lip balm, you can apply that, too. Though, pure castor oil may be more effective.
  • Step 3: Leave on skin for about 20 minutes, the time it takes for castor oil to absorb into your skin. Avoid drinking and eating in the meantime.
  • Step 4: Afterward, wash your lips and the skin around your mouth. Apply moisturizers, makeup, and other products as usual.
  • Repeat these steps each evening. For more impact, incorporate these steps into your routine daily.

Forehead

  • Step 1: In the morning, cleanse forehead skin and dry well.
  • Step 2: Place one drop of castor oil onto the tip of your finger. Apply to the skin on your forehead, especially close to and around the eyebrows.
  • Step 3: Leave on skin for about 20 minutes, the time it takes for castor oil to absorb into your skin.
  • Step 4: Afterward, wash your face and forehead. Apply products like makeup, creams, and others as usual.
  • Repeat these steps each evening. For more impact, incorporate these steps into your routine daily.

Chin and neckline

  • Step 1: In the morning, cleanse face, chin, and neck. Gently pat dry to remove moisture.
  • Step 2: Place one drop of castor oil onto the tip of your finger. Apply to the skin under your chin and along your neckline. Apply another drop to your fingertip and reapply for more adequate and even coverage, as needed.
  • Step 3: Leave on skin for 20 minutes, the time it takes for castor oil to absorb into your skin.
  • Step 4: Afterward, wash skin. Apply products like moisturizers, makeup, and others as usual.
  • Repeat these steps each evening. Incorporate these steps into your routine daily for at least two months for significant benefit.

Using castor oil topically is considered safe. However, skin reactions and allergies can occur.  Symptoms include:

  • itching
  • redness
  • pain
  • swelling
  • rashes

Before using castor oil for wrinkles, try a skin patch test with the oil to make sure you aren’t allergic.  If you experience these symptoms while using castor oil for reducing wrinkles (or other skin care practices), discontinue use immediately. Seek medical attention or first aid for any skin reaction.
